In keeping with tradition, we had a little "Christmas Morning" but this one was actually in the evening. I am not sure what I was thinking, more like I wasn't, but the only pictures I took were of my mom. In a way, it kind of shows where my concern was.

I made her a necklace, with the locket she had doted on before, and filled with our pictures.

Just like a planter I made her for Mother's Day when I was a little girl, Grace helped me put photos into this one.

Her "big" gift was a vintage, ornate, bubble glass frame with our family photo.

She LOVED all of her gifts.

Alexis, I spoiled rotten, but because Mom was coming to Arizona with us for Christmas I only let her open a couple gifts and made her swear an oath not open the rest until Christmas morning at our cousin's house.

She ALSO loved all of her gifts.

A Break in the Clouds

This year's winter trip to Utah was overcast with many worries. However, days like this prove that even in the midst of life's storms the clouds will part and you can feel rays of happiness.

Lex took us to this teeny, tiny thai restaurant that was BIG on taste.

Next stop, The Beehive Tea Room. She knows her big sister well.

We walked around the corner to a super cute book store and posed for some cheesy pictures.

Frosty Darling has been on my list of places to visit for a long time, and I FINALLY got the chance. I was not disappointed...total cuteness overload! I recognized the wares of many fellow Craft Lake City artists.

Grace had spent the night with Aunt Jen and Uncle Ken, and having made the most of being "Schmoo" free, we made our way to Bountiful to retrieve her. She had clearly had more fun than she could handle, because this is how she ended up when we stopped for Chinese.

That was one tired kid!

The day couldn't have ended more perfectly... Settlers anyone?

P.S. Unfortunately, the day's excitement took it's toll that night. Grace, Alexis, and I got extremely sick. Like, I felt I was on death's door. Turned out Alexis had walking pnemonia, my symptoms were the same as hers, and Grace got well the quickest. It was totally worth it though!

It wasn't until December 3rd that actually started the advent calendar. To make up for lost time we did 3 activities in one evening.

Grace and I decorated the small tree in the loft. This is the tree that holds a variety of ornaments...vintage, handmade, and the year's new additions.

We adopted a tradition I was introduced to by my SIL, Jamie. Each year we take a family excursion to pick out a new ornament apiece. They become a sort of time capsule...documenting what our current tastes or interests are.

Funny story... While on this mission, I pushed Grace in the cart as she became more and more inclined to get out and explore the ornament section unencumbered. Despite my efforts to keep her content on staying put, Jeff offered to get her out. In the middle...wait for it...of the entirely glass ornament section. Brilliant right? I asked him if he was sure it was a good idea to which he replied, "Yeah, she'll be al - CRASH! - right." You guessed it. She broke an ornament immediately and right as Jeff was giving me his assurance. I can't make this stuff up. We all just laughed and I swept the evidence out of sight. Not one of our best parenting moments.

Secondly, we wrote to Santa. Here are a few excerpts from Grace's letter:

"I hope I'll get the dollhouse."
Also,"how about a new movie...the Princess one?"
"I want a Barbie wearin' a sparkly dress."

These were her replies when asked what we should say to Santa. The girl knows what she wants!

Finally, Grace's third thing to open was a little gift.

That is exactly the response I had hoped for when I decided to make the Interactive Advent a family tradition!

25 Days of Good Intentions

I have had this brilliant, albeit involved, idea for some time now...Why not make an interactive advent calendar? Well, I am proud to say that I finally made the tags for this new family tradition, BUT putting it into action was a wee bit more difficult. This was one of those years that I hope will never be repeated in terms of preparedness for the holidays.

I. Had. ZERO. Preparedness.

That being said, I just jumped right into the hullabaloo. I had many a good intention, but when life decided to throw me for a loop I just had to go with it, do the best that I could, and enjoy the ride. Despite not accomplishing all that I had hoped (this includes putting only ONE ornament on our "big" tree) I think I learned a valuable lesson: This season is not about "making a list and checking it twice"...Often times life's most meaningful moments are unscripted. It was in losing myself in the pace of the holiday that I found out what is truly important to celebrate...Family.

Spooky Popcorn Eyeballs

Here is a fun Halloween take on popcorn balls:

Popcorn Ball Recipe

Mix together in bowl 4Qts Popcorn 3c mini marshmallows

In a heavy saucepan melt 1c butter then add 1 1/3 c sugar & 1/2 c light corn syrup
Bring to a boil... stir and simmer for 3 min (Remember to stir continuously!)
Remove from heat and add 1 tsp vanilla.
Mix together with popcorn and marshmallows, then shape into balls.
(The trick is to work quickly and a little bit of butter on hands keeps the mixture from sticking to them.)

To finish the eyeball just add Twizzler Pull-n-Peel licorice and an Oreo cookie!

I (heart) the Phoenix Art Museum. In the past, we visited the Rembrant and the Golden Age of Duch Art exhibit and loved it. We were thrilled to find out about Cézanne and American Modernism. Oh the vibrancy of color! Such unusual and beautiful perspective! Be still my beating heart! I wasn't allowed to take pictures, or steal any of the paintings or photographs *sigh*...but managed to get a few snapshots of silliness....

I filled embroidery hoops (yard sales...for pennies) with fabric from my collection and added 3 plates found at Goodwill. (just over $1 for all three)

Gardner Village is one of my very favorite places to visit while in Utah. It is retail paradise! Charming shops and restaurants take up residence in restored cabins, houses and buildings that line brick pathways and beautiful landscaping. If you are in the area, do yourself a favor, stop by this quaint village for some retail therapy and a stroll down memory lane.

Robin, my sister's best friend, runs the petting zoo where we get the VIP treatment. (One day, Grace will finally ride the ponies.)

In keeping with tradition, we set off TONS of fireworks. It was such a fun way to bring the celebrations to a close. Thank you family for the gift of a WONDERFUL birthday.

While sharing popcorn with Nana, Grace was also sharing with Cookie.
She looked up at Kara and said, "Whoa! Go easy Nana! This popcorn is for Cookie."

After I finished a phone call with Jeff, Grace said, "I love Daddy. He's the BEST in the Best!"

Driving to Josh and Jamie's we passed Camelback Mountain and Grace exclaimed, "that mountain looks like moon rocks and over there is the milky way." After I recovered from shock I asked her where she heard that from and she replied, "Dora."

Jeff was calling me out for behaving like a madwoman whenever we are loading up for a trip and Grace said, "you have to understand, she's bossy."

As I tucked Grace in bed I said, "Maybe tomorrow you can be my helper and we can clean your room." She tisks and replied, "No, I'm already busy."

(To Jamie and Alexis) "You crack me nuts!"

After Grace refused to stay in bed, Jeff finally became serious and threatened her. She exclaimed, "Ugh!!! You're KILLING my LIFE!!!!!" (and slammed her door) Jeff and I chuckled in bed as I secretly thought, "funny now...not so much when she's a teenager."

From Dated to Timeless: Terrariums

I have an infatuation with terrariums and this is one of my favorite and most simple transformations to date.

Rescued from a yard sale and Goodwill, these dome clocks only cost $4 total.

Disassemble.

The options are endless for what to display within the terrarium. I opted for moss filled vintage ceramics with mushrooms.

I cut a circle from a paper plate to cover the base (it had the holes from the hardware) and painted the whole thing with acrylic paint.

Unfortunately I was out of spray paint in the shade I wanted so I mixed a nice creamy color.

I can't wait to switch displays in and out for the seasons. Things like birds and butterflies, speckled eggs, skulls and bones, and ornaments to name a few ideas. Such fun!

What an absolute delight it was to participate in Joy School this year. Grace grew and learned so much and ABOVE all found true joy in friendship. I had the immense privilege of associating with some of the BEST women I know and their wonderful children. Sweet Isabel was hospitalized with pneumonia just before her big move to Japan. Poor dear. Becky and I took the kids to the hospital to hopefully brighten her day. Becky made sweet "sushi" in representation of Japan. She of course got better and now is experiencing a whole new part of the world. She'll have so much to tell us about when she comes back!

I was not about to let the little ones of our family miss the chance to play outdoors and hunt for eggs. That would be a sin. I wonder what her little mind thinks when she watches him perform? I love how she can spot one of his songs before he even begins singing, and that she makes special requests for "Daddy's music." If I am Jeff's #1 fan, she is certainly his #2.

Despite all the fun had and sights seen on the cruise, SHE was a sight for sore hearts.

We missed her dearly. While we were soaking up sun, Grace was soaking up some Mamaw and "Wexis" time in Utah. I cannot express how incredible it was to arrive home from our journey to be met by our little girl. My mom made the trip down a couple days before we arrived. Thanks Mom for saving us the drive and taking such good care of our baby!

Family Cruise '10: Life on Deck

Most vacationers fall into two categories: Cruisers or Non-Cruisers. We are cruise people. The chance to see at least 3 exciting locations, all meals included, and something to do at anytime of day are some of the reasons I enjoy cruises. Spending time with our family (our favorite people in the world) and sharing in these experiences is PARAMOUNT.

This cruise was truly something special. We were joined by nearly ALL of the VanWaggoner's. In total, the boat was occupied by 42 of us. Everywhere we went we saw a familiar face. It. Was. A. BLAST!

Here are some of pics I took aboard the ship:

One of the highlights (and there were MANY) was a testimony meeting we had on Easter Sunday. We reserved a quiet area (albeit a bit distracting since it overlooked the deck, which actually served as an interesting object lesson on being in the world, but not OF the world) to bare our testimonies with one another. A VERY touching and spirit filled experience.

Much time was spent lounging and listing to the guys play music. It's nice to be able to use the phrase, "I'm with the band."

Getting all gussied up is a treat for me. Something about wearing a dress or skirt made each dinner feel like a special night on the town, only the town was very small.

Park City

While visiting my mom and sister, we took a little afternoon trip to Park City. We meandered down the main drag and soaked up the character and charm of the numerous shops and restaurants.

If I had a time machine I would travel back to 6 minutes before our planned departure for Utah. Because THIS is what happened 5 minutes before:

I would assure Grace that whatever she thought was worth running into the house to get was in fact NOT worth getting. Or... maybe I would just pull her aside for a hug and tell her how much I love her and how excited I was to be going on a trip to Mamaw’s. That way she would have never tripped on the doormat and smacked her chin on the doorstep. She would have never had to go to the Urgent Care and receive 6 stitches. She would have never had to visit the doctor in Utah to get 5 “pokes.” She would have never had to wear a band-aide on her chin for over a month. She would have never gotten this scar on her chin.

But alas, there is no such machine. So, we are left with the stories. And Grace, with that little scar.

Queen Creek Art, Craft & Vintage Show

The Duane Ellsworth Post 129 Extravaganza took place this weekend. I was once again joined by my cohort, Jamie. We had the creative challenge of putting our touch on a 10x10 horse stall and it couldn't have been more fun.

My sweet friend Tricia of Vintage Bliss was my neighbor and brought a wide selection of lovelies.

The beautiful and talented Minnie was another of my stall sistas. I snagged one of her darling tops for Grace to wear as a dress. To. Die. For.

I had the wonderful opportunity of meeting Katie of Blue Green Arts. She put such thought and creativity into her merchandising and was selling such cool stuff. I HAD to grab a sampling of vintage envelopes. (Hum, to whom shall I write?) Check out her Etsy shop here.

Last, but certainly not least, the SUPER stylish Heidi of Paris Montana set up shop out of her vintage trailer. What I would give for one of these babies.

Grace Turns Tres

Don't judge me. This years party was NOT my best in presentation. Grace insisted on a Bear/Heart/Princess cake and I delivered. Note: Funfetti icing does not go through a tip...it just gets stuck. Not the prettiest cake, but it thrilled my baby and tasted great.

Aunt Andra and Uncle Jace spoiled her with a tea party set and boa.

Domestic Bliss Swap & Sale

Two lovely friends, Jamie & Tiffany, joined me to sell our wares at the first Domestic Bliss Swap & Sale. The event was to culminate the end of Domestic's HUGE sale and to show off the new store. JHB Gig: Glendale Chocolate Affair

The city of Glendale knows how to party. For the second time in less than a month The JHB played at a Glendale festival...Glendale Glitters and the Chocolate Affair. If you haven't been to the historic downtown area you are missing out! It boasts several antique shops and places to grab a bite to eat. (Anyone for little trip?)

The band performed on the main stage and were surrounded by the most delicious food.

This fall I joined up with three of the BEST mommies I know to start a Joy School for our little ones. What is Joy School you ask? It is a co-op form of pre-school where the children are taught principles and values that help them to be happy and joyful. Each week (in our case on Tues. & Thurs.) we rotate having school in our homes. It is such a great alternative to traditional pre-school. Everyone lives nearby, it's hands on and a delight to be a part of, and doesn't cost that much.

Grace absolutely LOVES it! It's one of her favorite topics of conversation. She get's so excited whenever it is mentioned. She loves playing with her friends and thier mommies. They've done so many fun activities like visit the zoo, go to the park, visit neighbors, play with animals, play outside, learn and sing songs, make food, tons of crafts, and holiday parties. It's named Joy School for a reason!

Here are some of the snapshots that I have taken this past semester:

When they arrive at Joy School they open their window to show that they are ready to have fun and behave. (They are supposed to shut their window if they misbehave, but Grace is the only one I've made do this. She seems to be a little feistier at home. In fact, her famous quote is, "I pushed Sophie.")
